Los Angeles Leads SoCal's 7 New Michelin Key Hotels
Southern California took seven of California's 12 new Michelin Key hotels for 2026, including West Hollywood's Sun Rose and a second Key for the Beverly Wilshire.

Southern California took seven of the twelve new Michelin Key hotels awarded in California in the 2026 selection, released by the MICHELIN Guide on 18 September 2026. Northern California took five. The Guide's full American list, covering 65 new and upgraded hotels, is published here.
Three of the seven are in greater Los Angeles, and one of those is the only Southern Californian hotel to move up a tier this year.

The seven
| Hotel | Where | Distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Beverly Wilshire, Beverly Hills | Beverly Hills | Two Keys |
| The Sun Rose | West Hollywood | One Key |
| Fairmont Breakers Long Beach | Long Beach | One Key |
| The Parker Palm Springs | Palm Springs | One Key |
| El Encanto | Santa Barbara | One Key |
| San Ysidro Ranch | Montecito | One Key |
| The Inn at Mattei's Tavern, Auberge Collection | Los Olivos | One Key |
The Beverly Wilshire is the region's only Two-Key entry. A Rodeo Drive fixture since 1928 and a durable film location, it is cited by inspectors for its spa and its Italianate pool, with Wolfgang Puck's CUT on site. Two Keys puts it in a national group of 657 hotels and above the 2,020 that hold One.
The Sun Rose in West Hollywood is the most conspicuous new arrival, and the least like a traditional hotel. Michelin's inspectors list several restaurants, a members' club, a music venue and a bowling alley, and single out a rooftop pool where, in the Guide's account, Art Deco hues come off the sunset. Forty-nine rooms and suites are sold on four different views, from the downtown skyline to the Hollywood Hills.
Fairmont Breakers Long Beach brings the list to a part of the county that rarely features in luxury hotel awards. The Guide describes 185 rooms over the harbour, a rooftop bar and restaurant, an outdoor pool and a spa, in what it frames as a mid-century Californian idiom rather than a generic beach resort.
The Parker Palm Springs is the sole desert entry, and the Guide leans into its refusal to modernise its own personality: bubblegum-pink bellhop uniforms, backyard croquet, a nautical-themed spa several hundred kilometres from the ocean, a giant silver elephant sculpture among the adornments in its 144 rooms.
Santa Barbara County took three, the same number as greater Los Angeles. El Encanto spreads suites and bungalows across a hillside above the city, with a resident dairy cow supplying the restaurant's cheese. San Ysidro Ranch in Montecito, where John and Jackie Kennedy honeymooned, holds 38 cottages and a policy of discretion that has kept it a celebrity standby. The Inn at Mattei's Tavern in Los Olivos runs from restored 19th-century cottages to modern suites, surrounded by vineyards and horse ranches.
Southern California outdrew the north, but not at the top
The seven-to-five split favours the south on volume. On tier it is closer to even: Southern California's only Two-Key entry is the Beverly Wilshire, and Northern California's only Two-Key entry is Solage in Calistoga. Neither half of the state gained a Three-Key hotel, and neither did the United States as a whole. America's 2026 additions produced 50 One Keys, eight direct Two Keys and seven promotions from One to Two — and no new Three.
That constraint is not local. Worldwide, the Key list grew from 2,457 hotels in 2025 to 2,832 in 2026, a 15.3 percent increase, while Three-Key hotels went from 143 to 155, up 8.4 percent. The top tier's share of the list fell from 5.82 percent to 5.47 percent. Michelin added breadth and withheld height.
California still led the country
| State | New Keys 2026 |
|---|---|
| California | 12 |
| New York | 9 |
| Texas | 7 |
| Georgia | 5 |
| North Carolina | 4 |
| Virginia, Louisiana, Florida | 3 each |
California's twelve is the largest state total, and its internal distribution is unusual. Greater Los Angeles, Santa Barbara County and the Napa–Sonoma wine corridor each took three. The Bay Area took two and San Francisco took none. For a state whose hotel reputation is built on two metropolitan areas, nine of the twelve new Keys went somewhere other than the centre of Los Angeles or San Francisco.
How the seven were classified
Michelin sorted its 65 American additions into six themes. Southern California's seven are spread across five of them, which is unusual — most states cluster in one or two.
| Hotel | Michelin's category |
|---|---|
| The Sun Rose | City standouts |
| Fairmont Breakers Long Beach | Coastal and waterfront destinations |
| Beverly Wilshire, Beverly Hills | Historic homes, inns and storied hotels |
| The Parker Palm Springs | Spa and resort destinations |
| El Encanto | Spa and resort destinations |
| San Ysidro Ranch | Countryside and farm stays |
| The Inn at Mattei's Tavern | Countryside and farm stays |
Nationally the six categories ran: historic homes and inns 14, city standouts 13, spa and resort destinations 12, mountain and nature retreats 10, coastal and waterfront 9, countryside and farm stays 7. Twenty-nine of the 65 — 45 percent — went to mountain, coastal or countryside properties, which Michelin described as the year's major American trend.
Southern California's result tracks that. Only one of its seven, The Sun Rose, is a city hotel in the Guide's own classification. The other six are resorts, ranches, a beach hotel and a Rodeo Drive landmark filed under history.
What a Key means
Michelin introduced the Key in 2024 as the hotel counterpart to its restaurant Star. Inspectors assess architecture, interior design, service, character, consistency and value across a hotel selection now exceeding 9,000 properties in more than 100 countries, and the distinction runs One, Two or Three Keys. It does not track nightly rate, which is why a 1928 Rodeo Drive landmark and a Palm Springs hotel with croquet sets on the lawn can occupy the same list.
The United States now holds 359 Key hotels, the largest count of any country, ahead of Italy's 224 and France's 220. The complete country-by-country selection is set out in the Guide's 2026 global release.
